Organising your bookkeeping records

A clear set of records starts with bank statements, invoices and a consistent filing routine.

Keep the source documents

Bank statements tell you when money moved. Invoices, receipts and supporting documents explain why. Keep both together so a transaction can be traced back to the evidence behind it.

Separate each company’s records

Use a separate folder for each business and accounting period. Consistent file names make it easier to find the right statement or invoice without mixing different companies’ records.

Review regularly

Check records throughout the year rather than leaving everything until year end. Flag missing documents and unfamiliar transactions while the details are still fresh.
